As schools across the country continue to explore how artificial intelligence fits into the classroom, Naples-based The Freedom Institute is earning international recognition for moving beyond the conversation and putting AI to work for students.

The innovative high school program has received a 2026 Global Recognition Award for innovation, recognizing its pioneering approach to personalized learning, workforce readiness and artificial intelligence education. Fewer than 6% of the approximately 15,000 organizations evaluated annually receive the honor.

The award recognizes organizations demonstrating measurable impact, originality and leadership in solving real-world challenges. Judges cited The Freedom Institute’s ability to integrate AI literacy, industry-recognized credentials, entrepreneurship and individualized student coaching into a high school model that is already producing measurable student outcomes.

“This recognition reflects the work of our students, educators, Success Coaches and leadership team. We’re showing that students don’t have to wait until college or the workforce to begin developing the skills they’ll need in an AI-driven economy. They’re learning to use AI responsibly to solve problems, think critically and prepare for meaningful careers.”

Christopher Marker, CEO, The Freedom Institute

Unlike many schools that are still developing strategies for artificial intelligence, The Freedom Institute has embedded AI throughout its curriculum. Through its Freedom AI initiatives and Career with AI programs, students earn industry-recognized credentials, including Google AI Essentials and Google Prompting Essentials, while applying those skills through entrepreneurship, workforce readiness training, interview preparation and real-world projects.

The school’s educational model combines technology with personalized support. Every student is paired with a dedicated Success Coach who provides individualized mentoring, goal setting, accountability and college and career guidance throughout the high school experience. Award judges noted that this student-centered approach has contributed to increased engagement, stronger credential completion rates and graduates who are prepared for the demands of a rapidly changing workforce.

A key part of that effort has been the leadership of Nathan Poteet, Executive Director of Programs & AI, who helped develop and expand Freedom AI, the school’s AI-integrated curriculum and workforce readiness initiative.

“Artificial intelligence shouldn’t replace human potential. It should amplify it. Our goal is to prepare students not only for today’s careers but for opportunities that don’t yet exist. That means teaching them how to think critically, adapt, innovate and lead.”

The Global Recognition Award is the latest in a growing list of national and international honors for The Freedom Institute. In 2024, the school was named a Yass Prize semifinalist, recognizing it as one of the nation’s most innovative education organizations. Since then, Freedom AI has been nominated for the 2026 Edison Awards, the Institute received the 2026 SWFL Inc. Innovation Award, and the organization secured a $1 million grant to expand AI certification and workforce readiness initiatives for students.

Award evaluators also recognized The Freedom Institute’s ability to pair innovation with character development, emphasizing that its curriculum combines critical thinking, ethical AI use and digital citizenship with academic excellence and career preparation. Rather than treating technology as an end in itself, the program focuses on preparing students to become thoughtful, adaptable leaders in an increasingly AI-driven world.

As Southwest Florida continues to diversify its economy and attract technology-focused employers, school leaders say preparing students with AI literacy and workforce skills will become increasingly important.

“This award belongs to Southwest Florida as much as it belongs to our school. Our community has embraced innovation and invested in preparing young people for the future. We’re proud that educational innovation happening here in Naples is being recognized on a global stage.”
